Irvin Mayfield & the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with Special Guest Alison Hinds
Duration: 90 minutes
Program Summary
We’ll say it – Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Irvin Mayfield is one of the most electrifying composers alive. CNN’s Anderson Cooper calls him “one of America’s greatest artists.” Mayfield leads his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) as they introduce their swinging sound and a “party that is part jubilee and part battle royal.” Barbadian superstar vocalist Alison Hinds performs as a special guest like you’ve never seen her before.
Mayfield is one of the most decorated and recorded jazz musicians of his generation. Following a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance, The New York Times says Mayfield “has the clarion intonation and relaxed power of his city’s vaunted trumpet lineage.” As an ambassador for his hometown as well as an esteemed bandleader, Mayfield has been a driving force in New Orleans’ cultural renewal in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He joins his sizzling 18-piece ensemble to deliver soulful and swinging testimony to that great city’s rich musical heritage and thriving present. Mixing original compositions and old favorites, NOJO’s explosive versatility has made them an audience favorite from Moscow to Rio, San Francisco to New Orleans.
Alison Hinds, known as the “Queen of Soca,” is one of the most popular Soca singers in the world. Soca’s lineage draws directly on Calypso while adding funk and soul influences. Ms. Hinds is one of those prodigious talents whom many claim to have seen at her earliest performances and of whom they foretold a lifetime of gracing the world’s most prestigious stages. But her love of Soca drew her in a different direction to stardom, leaving those who witnessed these dalliances with jazz and pop to rue what might have been.

Piazzolla Trio with Special Guest Lil Buck
Duration: 75 minutes
Program Summary
Harpist Ann Hobson Pilot, violinist Tai Murray, and Argentinian bandoneon player and composer JP Jofre collaborate to perform the music of Astor Piazzolla. Special guest dancer Lil Buck adds his unique improvisation and intricate freestyle footwork.
Of all the Latin composers, the most widely played in classical circles is Astor Piazzolla (1921 – 1992), who is almost universally considered the world’s foremost composer of tango music. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.
Ann Hobson Pilot, the legendary harpist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra that the likes of James Levine, Yo-Yo Ma, and John Williams consider the most accomplished of her time, celebrates the upcoming release of her Piazzolla recording by joining world renowned violinist Tai Murray and New York Times-heralded bandoneon player JP Jofre to perform the music of this revolutionary tango master. The concert features an extraordinary improvised tango-inspired dance performance by Memphis-raised Lil Buck, who wowed Yo-Yo Ma and introduced mainstream audiences to jookin, a street dance born in his hometown.
